Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

In a hot desert, where the sun shines like a golden fire, a small lizard named Zizi was very thirsty. She had been walking for many hours, and her throat felt dry and scratchy. The desert was full of sand and rocks, but there was very little water. Zizi knew that she had to find shade soon, or she would not survive. She remembered what her mother had told her: "When the sun is high, find a cool place under a rock or a bush."

Zizi saw a big cactus plant, which was green and round. She knew that cacti store water inside their thick stems to survive the dry desert. "If I stay near this cactus, I might find some water," she thought. She climbed up the cactus carefully, but the sharp spines hurt her feet. Suddenly, she heard a soft voice. "Be careful, little one," said a wise old tortoise, who was resting in the shade of the cactus. "The spines are sharp, but the cactus is a friend to all desert animals."

Grammar Level

A2 · Past Simple, relative clauses, prepositions of place

Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a short story about desert survival using past simple verbs.
  • recognise and use new vocabulary: desert, thirsty, shade, adapt, scarcity.
  • identify how desert plants and animals adapt to their environment.
  • answer comprehension questions about the story's events and moral.
  • use relative clauses with 'who' and 'which' to describe people and things.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular) / irregular verbs

Use the past simple to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., 'saw', 'had', 'found').

“ She had been walking for many hours, and her throat felt dry and scratchy.
Tip: Learn the past form of irregular verbs by heart, and remember that 'did' is used for questions and negatives in the past simple.
Relative clauses with 'who' and 'which'

Use 'who' for people and 'which' for things to add extra information about a noun. The clause comes right after the noun it describes.

“ Zizi saw a big cactus plant, which was green and round.
Tip: Make sure the relative pronoun agrees with the noun: 'who' for people, 'which' for animals and things.
Prepositions of place: under, in, near, on

Prepositions of place show where something is. Common ones are 'under', 'in', 'near', and 'on'.

“ She found a shady spot under a large rock and waited until the evening.
Tip: Draw a picture in your mind to remember the difference: 'under' means below, 'on' means touching the top, 'in' means inside.
