Paragraphs 1–2 of 6

In the impossible future, the planet Candoria was a breathtaking sphere of spun sugar and liquid neon, governed by a benevolent AI called the Sugar Sovereign. Inside this saccharine world, a sleek, silver-furred cat named Jinx-7 lived in the royal palace, her retinas glowing with cybernetic software. One day, the palace's core—a gleaming artifact known as the Chrono-Candy—vanished from its vault, and the entire kingdom began to melt into a gooey, chaotic mess. The Sovereign, desperate and flickering, pinned its last hope on Jinx-7, charging her with the task of retrieving the stolen relic before the planet collapsed into a sticky abyss.

Without a second thought, Jinx-7 set off on her pursuit, vaulting across rooftops of crystallized honey and diving through tunnels of licorice that writhed like live wires. She was a lone operative, accustomed to working solo, and she resented the idea of any backup. But halfway down the treacherous Mallow Ravine, she collided head-on with a bumbling robot named Crumb, a dented garbage-collector unit with a heart of gold and a programming language stuck on cheerful optimism. Though Jinx-7 regarded Crumb as a hindrance, the little robot stubbornly tagged along, insisting that friends were the best map in any jungle.

  • Use the past perfect to show the order of past events clearly.
  • Identify and produce non-defining relative clauses with 'which' to add extra information.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's plot and characters.
  • Discuss themes of friendship and sacrifice using the story's vocabulary.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple Passive: was/were + past participle

Use the past simple passive to focus on the action or the receiver of the action rather than the doer, especially when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious from context.

“ In the end, the Chrono-Candy was restored to the Sugar Sovereign, and the kingdom was saved
Tip: Make sure the past participle is correct (e.g., 'restored', 'saved') and that the subject agrees with 'was' or 'were'.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time, showing which event came first.

“ She had always prided herself on self-reliance, yet here was a clunky robot willing to give up its own power core for her sake.
Tip: Use the past perfect only when you need to make the order of past events clear; otherwise, the past simple is often enough.
Non-defining relative clause: which + verb

Use a non-defining relative clause with 'which' to add extra information about a whole clause or a thing. It is separated by commas and does not change the main meaning.

“ across the Peppermint Bridge, which groaned under their weight
Tip: Always put a comma before 'which' when it introduces extra, non-essential information, and never use 'that' in this type of clause.
