Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Dario was a magic dolphin. He could swim through the air. One day, he flew into a sunny park. But the sun felt cold and grey. A dark shadow hid behind every tree.

A little rabbit cried, “The shadow stole the fire of the sun!” An old turtle pointed to a silver bell. “Together, we will ring this bell and bring the sun back.” Dario had to make a difficult choice. He could fly away, or he could stay and help.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular) / subject + irregular verb

“ Dario chose to stay.
Tip: Learn the irregular past forms of common verbs like 'choose' (chose), 'fly' (flew), and 'make' (made) to use them correctly.
Modal verb 'could' for past ability: subject + could + base verb

Use 'could' to talk about general abilities or possibilities in the past.

“ He could swim through the air.
Tip: Remember that 'could' is followed by the base form of the verb, without 'to'.
Prepositions of place: in, behind, with

Prepositions of place show where something is or happens. 'In' means inside, 'behind' means at the back of, and 'with' means using or accompanied by.

“ A dark shadow hid behind every tree.
Tip: Visualise the scene to choose the correct preposition: if something is at the back of a tree, use 'behind'.
