Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Sir Alden was a young knight who loved adventures. One day, he rode his horse into a dark forest. He wanted to find the famous Crystal Cave. People said the cave was full of shiny crystals and ancient secrets. Sir Alden did not ask anyone for help because he thought he was very clever.

Inside the cave, the crystals sparkled like stars. Sir Alden walked deeper and deeper. He did not mark his path, so he soon got lost. The tunnels all looked the same, and he could not find the exit. He felt scared and alone in the cold, dark cave.

Grammar Level

A2 · Past Simple, relative clauses with 'who', negatives with 'did not'

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a short story about a knight's adventure in a crystal cave.
  • Recognise and use the past simple tense to talk about completed actions.
  • Form negative sentences in the past simple using 'did not' + base verb.
  • Identify and understand relative clauses with 'who' that describe people.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's events and moral.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular) / irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, while irregular verbs have special forms.

“ Sir Alden was a young knight who loved adventures.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'be' (was/were), 'ride' (rode), and 'find' (found) do not follow the -ed rule.
Relative clause with 'who': noun + who + verb

Use 'who' to give more information about a person. The clause comes right after the person it describes.

“ Sir Alden was a young knight who loved adventures.
Tip: Make sure the relative clause matches the person: use 'who' for people, not 'which' or 'that'.
Past Simple negative: did not + base verb

Use 'did not' (didn't) + the base form of the verb to make a negative sentence in the past simple.

“ He did not ask anyone for help because he thought he was very clever.
Tip: After 'did not', always use the base verb (e.g., 'ask', not 'asked').
