In a quiet kingdom, there were many lanterns. The lanterns were near the castle walls. They made a soft, warm light. A gentle dragon named Lumi lived on a hill near the town. Every night, Lumi read books in the lantern light.

One day, the castle garden stopped growing. The flowers were sad and dry. The king asked, "Who can help us?" Lumi heard this from her hill. She wanted to help, but she was shy. She thought, "Maybe I can find an answer in my books." She read about a special place called a labyrinth. A labyrinth is a place with many paths, like a maze. In her book, she saw a picture of an embroidered cloth. The cloth had beautiful flowers on it. The book said, "This cloth can help the garden grow." Lumi said to herself, "I will go through the labyrinth to find it."

Grammar Focus

Prepositions of place: near, on, through

We use 'near' to mean close to something, 'on' to mean touching a surface, and 'through' to mean moving inside something from one side to the other.

“ Lumi walked through the dark labyrinth.
Tip: Remember: 'near' is for being close, 'on' is for touching, and 'through' is for moving inside and out.
Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past

We use the past simple to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed; irregular verbs change form.

“ She took it and ran back to the castle.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'took' and 'ran' because they do not use -ed.
Future Simple with 'will': subject + will + verb

We use 'will' to talk about the future, like plans or promises.

“ I will go through the labyrinth to find it.
Tip: Use 'will' before the main verb, and never add -s to the verb after 'will'.
