Egbert was not an ordinary elephant, for he had been equipped with a time machine that had been assembled by a retired clockmaker named Professor Pemberton. The machine, which resembled a brass bathtub with umbrellas attached, allowed Egbert to travel to any era he desired. Although most elephants are content with peanuts and mud baths, Egbert was fascinated by the possibility of exploring history. His trunk, which was unusually dexterous, could operate the machine's delicate levers with surprising precision.

One fateful afternoon, Egbert discovered that a villainous human named Dr. Grumble had been using a similar device to steal priceless artifacts from the past. Dr. Grumble, whose greed was legendary, had already pocketed the crown of Charlemagne and a rare dinosaur egg. Egbert realized that if the villain were not stopped, the future would be irreparably damaged. Therefore, he decided to pursue Dr. Grumble through the corridors of time, even though the task seemed daunting.

  • Infer character motivation and theme from a story.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple Passive: was/were + past participle

Use the past simple passive to describe actions that were done to someone or something in the past, often when the doer is unknown or unimportant.

“ Egbert was not an ordinary elephant, for he had been equipped with a time machine that had been assembled by a retired clockmaker named Professor Pemberton.
Tip: Focus on the receiver of the action and use 'by' only if you need to mention the doer.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time.

“ Dr. Grumble, whose greed was legendary, had already pocketed the crown of Charlemagne and a rare dinosaur egg.
Tip: Look for time markers like 'already', 'before', or 'by the time' to signal the past perfect.
Non-defining relative clause: who/which + clause, set off by commas

Use non-defining relative clauses to add extra information about a noun. They are separated by commas and can be removed without changing the main meaning.

“ The machine, which resembled a brass bathtub with umbrellas attached, allowed Egbert to travel to any era he desired.
Tip: Never use 'that' in a non-defining relative clause; always use 'who' for people and 'which' for things.
