In a hidden glade where mushrooms glowed like tiny moons, a fairy named Lila built a secret laboratory. Although she was small, her dreams were enormous, and she worked tirelessly to create a machine that could clean polluted streams. Every day, she mixed sparkling dew with crushed crystals, hoping to find the perfect formula. However, her project required expensive materials that she could not afford alone.

Lila decided to ask the village council for funding, because she believed in her invention's potential. She prepared a detailed plan and presented it with confidence, but the council members shook their heads. "Your machine is too risky," they said, "and we cannot waste money on a fairy's fantasy." Although Lila felt disappointed, she did not give up; instead, she continued her experiments in secret.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) for regular verbs, or irregular forms

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, while irregular verbs have special forms.

“ In a hidden glade where mushrooms glowed like tiny moons, a fairy named Lila built a secret laboratory.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'build' become 'built' in the past simple, not 'builded'.
Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

Use the present perfect to connect a past action to the present, often when the exact time is not important.

“ Because she had been patient, Lila received the support she needed to build a full-sized machine.
Tip: Use 'since' or 'for' with the present perfect to show how long an action has continued.
First Conditional: If + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about a possible future situation and its result.

“ If she had given up then, the stream would have remained dirty forever, but she kept trying new combinations.
Tip: In the if-clause, use the present simple, not 'will', even when talking about the future.
