Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a short story about a historian who faces his fear.
  • recognise and use regular past simple verbs like studied, walked, and smiled.
  • form negative past simple sentences with did not + base verb.
  • use was and were to describe past feelings and states.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular verbs)

Use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. For regular verbs, add -ed to the base verb.

“ He studied old books.
Tip: Remember that the past simple form is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
Past Simple: was/were + adjective

Use was or were to describe feelings or states in the past. Was is for I, he, she, it; were is for you, we, they.

“ Leo was very afraid.
Tip: Use was with singular subjects and were with plural subjects.
Negation in Past Simple: did not + base verb

Use did not (didn't) + the base form of the verb to make negative sentences in the past simple.

“ Leo did not like it.
Tip: After did not, always use the base verb, not the past form.
