Paragraphs 1–2 of 5

Although Captain Cosmo was a small dog, he had a very important job on the space station. He was the leader of the station's famous detective team. One morning, he received a message about a new competition. All the teams on the station had to solve a mystery. The prize was a special golden bone. Cosmo wanted to win more than anything.

Because the competition was difficult, Cosmo knew he could not solve it alone. He called his three best friends: Mia the mouse, Leo the lizard, and Pip the parrot. "If we work together, we can win," he said. Each friend had a different skill. Mia was small and could go into tiny places. Leo was strong and could move heavy objects. Pip had sharp eyes and could see things far away.

Grammar Level

B1 · Subordinate clauses, modal 'could', first conditional

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a short mystery story set in a space station.
  • Recognise and use 'although' and 'because' to connect ideas in a sentence.
  • Use 'could' to talk about past abilities and 'if' clauses to talk about possibilities.
  • Answer comprehension questions about characters, events, and the moral of the story.

Grammar Focus

Subordinate clauses with 'although' and 'because'

Use 'although' to show a contrast and 'because' to give a reason. These words introduce a dependent clause that adds information to the main clause.

“ Although Captain Cosmo was a small dog, he had a very important job on the space station.
Tip: When you start a sentence with 'although' or 'because', put a comma after the dependent clause.
Modal verb 'could' for past ability

Use 'could' to talk about general ability in the past. It shows what someone was able to do.

“ Mia was small and could go into tiny places.
Tip: Remember that 'could' is the past form of 'can' and does not change with the subject.
First conditional with 'if' + present simple, 'can' + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real possibilities in the future. The 'if' clause uses present simple, and the main clause uses 'can' or 'will' + base verb.

“ If we work together, we can win.
Tip: Do not use 'will' in the 'if' clause. Use present simple instead.
