In a faraway desert, there was a small candy kingdom that looked like a giant birthday cake. The ruler was a brave superhero named Captain Lollipop, who could shoot sweet syrup from his hands. But Captain Lollipop had a big secret: he was terribly afraid of the hot sun. Every time the sun came up, he hid inside his chocolate castle because he did not want to feel the burning heat. The other candy people felt sad because their hero never came out to play during the day.

One very hot morning, a tiny lizard named Lizzy knocked on the castle door. She said, "Captain, I need your help! The desert is very thirsty, and the candy flowers are dying because of the scarcity of water." Captain Lollipop peeked out and saw that the desert looked dry and scary. Lizzy smiled and said, "Don't worry. I will teach you how to survive. First, we must find shade under a big rock." The captain took a deep breath and followed her outside.

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) / irregular past

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., hide → hid, take → took).

“ The captain took a deep breath and followed her outside.

Tip: Learn the irregular past forms by heart, because they do not follow the -ed rule.

Relative clause with 'who' or 'that': noun + who/that + verb

Use who or that to add extra information about a person or thing. The clause comes right after the noun it describes.

“ The ruler was a brave superhero named Captain Lollipop, who could shoot sweet syrup from his hands.

Tip: Make sure the relative clause gives extra information about the noun right before it.

Prepositions of place: in, under, inside, outside

Prepositions of place show where something is or happens. Common ones are in, under, inside, and outside.

“ Under the rock, Lizzy showed him a cactus that stored water inside its thick stem.

Tip: Visualise the scene to choose the correct preposition: under means directly below, inside means within something.
