Deep beneath the Arctic ice, a hidden city named Aquaria sparkled with bioluminescent coral. Lumi, a young penguin with an unusually curious spirit, had always been fascinated by the city's annual Glide Competition. This prestigious event required participants to navigate a complex underwater maze while performing acrobatic feats. Although Lumi was not the fastest swimmer, his determination and kindness had earned him the respect of many Aquarians. He trained diligently, often helping other contestants who struggled with the challenging course.

The competition day arrived, and the entire city gathered in the Grand Bubble Arena. Each contestant was evaluated on speed, agility, and creativity. Lumi's routine included a series of spins and a daring leap through a narrow crevice, which he had practiced countless times. However, his main rival, a sleek penguin named Kael, was known for his aggressive tactics and had won the competition three years in a row. The crowd buzzed with anticipation as the two favorites prepared to compete.

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to describe an action that happened before another past action.

Tip: Use 'had' for the earlier action and simple past for the later one.
Passive Voice: be + past participle

Use the passive voice when the focus is on the action or when the doer is unknown or less important.

“ Each contestant was evaluated on speed, agility, and creativity.
Tip: Make sure the subject receives the action; include 'by' if you want to mention the doer.
Modal Verb 'could' for past ability: could + base verb

Use 'could' to talk about general ability in the past.

“ Lumi could have easily won, but instead, he turned back and extended a flipper to help Kael.
Tip: Don't confuse 'could' (general ability) with 'was able to' (specific achievement).
