  • Use 'there was' and 'there were' to describe existence in the past.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb (regular and irregular)

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., go → went, find → found).

“ He found a strange box on a beach.
Tip: Learn irregular past forms by heart, as they don't follow the -ed rule.
Past Simple Negative: subject + did not + base verb

Use 'did not' (didn't) + the base form of the verb to make negative sentences in the past simple.

“ He did not watch the clock, and he wasted time.
Tip: After 'did not', always use the base verb, not the past form.
There was / There were: there + was/were + noun

Use 'there was' with singular nouns and 'there were' with plural nouns to say that something existed or was present in the past.

“ But the treasure was not there.
Tip: Remember: 'there was' for one thing, 'there were' for many things.
