Prince Kael lived in a silver Moon Base that floated above the grey lunar surface. Every day, he watched the Earth rise through the thick glass windows, and he wondered how living things worked inside their bodies. His tutor, a small robot named Luma, often told him stories about the human body. "Your heart is like a powerful engine," Luma said one morning. "It never stops, even when you sleep."

"But how does the heart move blood?" Kael asked, curious. Luma projected a glowing image of a red blood cell named Ruby. "Ruby travels through tubes called arteries," Luma explained. "The heart pumps blood through these arteries to every part of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition to your muscles and brain." Kael watched Ruby squeeze through a narrow artery and then rush into a wide chamber. "It's like a busy space station," he said. "Exactly," Luma replied. "And every cell needs those supplies to survive."

Grammar focus and learning objectives covered in this story.

Grammar Level

B1 · Present Simple, Past Simple, First Conditional

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe how the heart pumps blood around the body using present simple verbs.
  • Identify that blood carries oxygen and nutrition to cells through arteries.
  • Explain how exercise keeps the heart strong and improves blood flow.
  • Use first conditional sentences to talk about real possibilities.
  • Recognise and use target vocabulary: artery, pump, oxygen, nutrition, exercise.

Grammar Focus

Present Simple for facts and routines: subject + verb(-s)

Use the present simple to talk about things that are always true or happen regularly. It is common when describing how the body works.

“ The heart pumps blood through these arteries to every part of the body.
Tip: Remember to add -s or -es to the verb when the subject is he, she, or it.
Past Simple for completed actions: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular form

Use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. It is used for events that happened at a specific time.

“ He put on his suit and worked with the crew until the oxygen flowed again.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'put' and 'felt' because they do not end in -ed.
First conditional: If + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real possibilities in the future. It shows what will happen if a condition is met.

“ If the heart didn't pump strongly, Ruby would never reach your toes.
Tip: Note that the example uses the second conditional (if + past, would + verb) for imaginary situations. For real future possibilities, use 'if + present, will + verb'.
