A1 · Present Simple (be and action verbs), can for permission

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a short story about a shark and a cave using present simple verbs.
  • Recognise and use 'am/is/are' to describe people, places, and feelings.
  • Use action verbs in the present simple to talk about what characters do.
  • Use 'can' to give permission or talk about ability in simple sentences.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's events and its message about patience.

Grammar Focus

Present Simple with 'be': subject + am/is/are + complement

Use 'am', 'is', or 'are' to describe states, feelings, or locations in the present. 'Am' goes with 'I', 'is' with he/she/it, and 'are' with you/we/they.

“ Tom and Sam are in a small boat.
Tip: Remember: 'I am', 'he/she/it is', 'you/we/they are'. Use 'are' for plural subjects like 'Tom and Sam'.
Present Simple with action verbs: subject + verb(-s) + object

Use the present simple to talk about actions that happen regularly or are happening now. Add -s to the verb for he, she, or it.

“ They see a big rock with a hole.
Tip: For he/she/it, add -s to the verb (e.g., 'he sees', 'she swims'). For I/you/we/they, use the base verb.
Modal verb 'can' for ability or permission: subject + can + base verb

Use 'can' to say someone is able to do something or is allowed to do it. The verb after 'can' is always in the base form (no -s, no 'to').

“ You can stay here, but you must be patient.
Tip: After 'can', never add 'to' or -s. Say 'You can stay', not 'You can to stay' or 'You can stays'.
