Deep within the Enchanted Forest, where ancient oaks twisted their branches into cryptic runes, a mystery had taken root. Every few decades, a monstrous silhouette was said to prowl the misty glades, and the locals called it the Thunder Lizard. When young biologist Maya claimed she had stumbled upon its nesting ground, her colleagues were electrified, yet she had never actually seen the creature. She had fabricated the coordinates to outshine her rival, a reckless decision that now bound five lives to a coming storm. The expedition packed their gear under a bruised, ominous sky, unaware that nature was about to put their trust to the test.

The forest responded to their intrusion with low, throaty murmurs, as if it were debating their fate. Following Maya's forged map, the team pushed deeper into the undergrowth, tripping over roots that seemed to rise deliberately in their path. She felt a knot of guilt tighten as her confident directions led them astray into a thicket of thornbushes and pale lichen. The wind abruptly changed course, carrying a cold, metallic scent that made her stomach drop. With alarming speed, the daylight drained away, and the canopy began to groan under the weight of the advancing thunderheads.

B2 · Past Perfect, Passive Voice, Third Conditional, narrative tenses

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise and use the past perfect to sequence past events clearly in a story.
  • Identify and form passive voice sentences to shift focus from the doer to the action.
  • Construct third conditional sentences to discuss hypothetical past outcomes and regrets.
  • Read and understand a B2-level narrative about honesty, trust, and consequences.
  • Use new vocabulary related to nature, weather, and emotions (e.g., tempest, bracken, unbreachable).

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time. It shows which event came first.

“ She had fabricated the coordinates to outshine her rival, a reckless decision that now bound five lives to a coming storm.
Tip: Use the past perfect for the earlier event and the past simple for the later one to make the order of events clear.
Passive Voice: be + past participle

Use the passive voice when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, not on who does it. It is common in formal or descriptive writing.

“ Every few decades, a monstrous silhouette was said to prowl the misty glades, and the locals called it the Thunder Lizard.
Tip: Only use the passive when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious from context; otherwise, the active voice is usually clearer.
Third Conditional: if + past perfect, would have + past participle

Use the third conditional to imagine a different past outcome that did not happen. It expresses regret, criticism, or hypothetical situations.

“ If she had told the truth, they would have avoided the storm.
Tip: Remember that the if-clause uses the past perfect and the main clause uses would have + past participle; never use would have in the if-clause.
