The lunar base, which had been established as a sanctuary for endangered species, was located in a crater near the moon's south pole. It was widely acknowledged by scientists as a crucial preserve for animals whose habitats on Earth were disappearing. Inside the base, a Bengal tiger named Raj paced calmly through the artificial forest. His species was endangered, meaning few remained in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching. Raj had been brought here to ensure his kind would not face extinction.

One morning, Raj noticed that his favorite toy, a small metallic ball, was missing from its usual spot. He searched the base's corridors, but the ball was nowhere to be found. An elderly tiger named Sera, who had lived on the base for many years, watched him with wise, patient eyes. "Young one, you must respect your elders," she said softly. "I have seen many things here, and I can help you find what you seek."

Grammar focus and learning objectives covered in this story.

Grammar Level

B2 · Passive Voice, Relative Clauses, Past Perfect

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise and use the passive voice to describe actions where the doer is unknown or unimportant.
  • Identify and produce relative clauses to add descriptive information about people and things.
  • Use the past perfect to sequence past events and clarify which action happened first.
  • Define key vocabulary such as endangered, species, preserve, extinction, and sanctuary in context.
  • Explain simple actions that help protect endangered animals, as demonstrated in the story.

Grammar Focus

Passive Voice: subject + be + past participle

The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, rather than the doer. It is common in formal and scientific writing.

“ The lunar base, which had been established as a sanctuary for endangered species, was located in a crater near the moon's south pole.
Tip: Use the passive voice when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or when you want to emphasize the action itself.
Relative Clauses: who, which, that

Relative clauses add extra information about a noun. They can be defining (essential) or non-defining (extra, set off by commas).

“ An elderly tiger named Sera, who had lived on the base for many years, watched him with wise, patient eyes.
Tip: Use 'who' for people, 'which' for things, and 'that' for both in defining clauses. Use commas for non-defining clauses.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

The past perfect is used to show that an action happened before another past action. It helps clarify the order of events.

“ It had been moved accidentally by a cleaning robot.
Tip: Use the past perfect when you need to talk about an action that was completed before another past action or time.
