Paragraphs 1–2 of 6

In a remote valley where the air shimmered with heat, a young ranger named Elara was tracking a rare tiger. The tiger, whose stripes glowed like embers, belonged to an endangered species that many believed had vanished. Elara had been assigned to guide a curious child named Milo to a new preserve, a safe haven where the tiger could live without fear. "Remember, Milo," she said, "our job is to protect, not to capture." The ground trembled slightly, and a puff of smoke rose from a nearby volcano.

Suddenly, a dazzling unicorn named Sparklehoof burst from the volcano's crater, her mane trailing sparks. "Greetings, tiny humans!" she neighed. "I am the guardian of this lair, but a villain named Grumbleguts is stealing all the lava to build a giant hot tub!" Elara and Milo exchanged puzzled glances. "Without lava, the volcano will collapse, and the sanctuary for endangered animals will be destroyed," Sparklehoof explained. "We must stop him, but I cannot lie to save my life—literally."

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action.

“ Elara had been assigned to guide a curious child named Milo to a new preserve.
Tip: Look for 'had' before the main verb to identify this tense.
Passive Voice: be + past participle

Use the passive voice when the focus is on the action or result, not the doer.

“ The fire-proof frogs, whose existence depended on the lava's warmth, were saved.
Tip: The passive often includes 'by' to show the agent, but it can be omitted.
First Conditional: if + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real possibilities in the future.

“ If you take the lava, you'll destroy the frogs' habitat and the entire preserve.
Tip: The 'if' clause uses present simple, and the main clause uses 'will'.
