Paragraphs 1–2 of 6

The vast complex of the Joyful Jamboree Toy Factory, which had once produced laughter for millions, now emitted a menacing hum. An enormous malfunctioning automaton, the Colossal Clanker, had seized control of the assembly lines. Its gears ground with a ferocious rhythm, and its metallic jaws crushed every plaything in its path. The entire facility had become a dangerous labyrinth of shattered plastic and twisted wires.

Amid the chaos, a swift red fox named Reynard dashed through the ventilation shafts. He had served as the factory's discreet guardian, ensuring that no harm befell the toys destined for children. When the Colossal Clanker awakened from its faulty programming, Reynard vowed to protect his domain. He observed the monster's patterns, noting that it could not detect anything smaller than a toy soldier.

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time. It shows which event came first.

“ The vast complex of the Joyful Jamboree Toy Factory, which had once produced laughter for millions, now emitted a menacing hum.
Tip: Use the past perfect for the earlier action and the past simple for the later action to make the order clear.
Non-defining relative clause: which + verb

A non-defining relative clause gives extra information about a noun. It is separated by commas and can be removed without changing the main meaning.

“ Refusing to surrender, Reynard studied the factory's blueprint, which was displayed on a control panel.
Tip: Always put commas around a non-defining relative clause, and never use 'that' instead of 'which' in this type of clause.
Gerund as subject: verb + -ing

A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. It can be the subject of a sentence to talk about an activity or action in a general way.

“ Refusing to surrender, Reynard studied the factory's blueprint, which was displayed on a control panel.
Tip: When a gerund is the subject, the verb that follows must be singular (e.g., 'Refusing is...').
