In the heart of the Rub' al Khali, where the sun scorches the earth and the wind carries secrets, lay the oasis of Zerzura. It was said that this hidden paradise appeared only to those who possessed a pure heart and an unyielding spirit. Young Amara, a girl of twelve with eyes as dark as the desert night, had been drawn to its legend by her grandmother's tales. Her most treasured possession, a small wooden falcon named Zephyr, was clutched tightly in her hand as she embarked on her quest. The falcon, carved by her late father, was her constant companion and her only link to a past she barely remembered.

After days of wandering, Amara finally stumbled upon the oasis, its emerald waters shimmering like a mirage. Palm trees swayed gently, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of dates and jasmine. As she knelt to drink, a sudden gust of wind snatched Zephyr from her grasp, carrying it into the dense reeds that bordered the pool. Desperately, she plunged into the thicket, but the falcon had vanished, as if swallowed by the shadows. A profound sense of loss washed over her, and she realized that finding Zephyr would require more than just a frantic search.

Grammar Level

B2 · Passive Voice, Past Perfect, Modal Verbs

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize and use passive voice to shift focus from the doer to the action in narratives.
  • Form and use the past perfect tense to sequence past events accurately.
  • Apply modal verbs like 'should' and 'must' to give advice and express obligation.
  • Analyze how patience is developed as a theme through the character's actions and the story's events.

Grammar Focus

Passive Voice: subject + be + past participle

Used to focus on the action or the receiver of the action rather than the doer. It is common in narratives to create a mysterious or formal tone.

“ It was said that this hidden paradise appeared only to those who possessed a pure heart and an unyielding spirit.
Tip: Use passive voice when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or when you want to emphasize the action itself.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

Used to describe an action that happened before another past action or time. It helps to show the sequence of events in the past.

“ The falcon, carved by her late father, was her constant companion and her only link to a past she barely remembered.
Tip: Use past perfect to clarify which past event happened first, especially when telling a story with multiple past events.
Modal Verbs for Obligation and Advice: should, must, have to

Used to express necessity, obligation, or strong advice. They indicate what is required or recommended.

“ She realized that finding Zephyr would require more than just a frantic search.
Tip: Remember that 'must' is stronger than 'should'; use 'must' for rules or strong personal obligation, and 'should' for suggestions.
