The Owl's Silent Strategy

Upper Intermediate (B2 Low) Test Preparation CEFR B2 578 words 5 min read

In the bustling harbor of Port Meridian, the pirate ship _Seafang_ was considered the most disciplined vessel on the western coast, a reputation largely owed to its unlikely navigator, an owl named Orin. While the crew slept in hammocks, Orin spent countless nights studying tide charts, memorizing the creaks of the hull, and rehearsing emergency signals with the lookouts. It was widely known among the sailors that his patient habits had saved the ship from storms and sandbars more times than they could count. Yet none of the crew suspected that these same preparations would soon be tested by a far more dangerous threat.

One moonless night, the first mate, Silas, gathered a small group of disgruntled sailors in the cargo hold, intending to seize command at dawn. He had hidden weapons in barrels, cut the ropes of the longboat, and given false orders to the helmsman, all to ensure that Captain Mira would be powerless to resist. Silas did not know, however, that Orin had observed his secret meetings from the rigging, jotting every detail in a small wax tablet. Because the owl had prepared for every conceivable emergency, he recognized these signs not as random mischief but as the unmistakable pattern of a mutiny.
