The Stillness That Devours Stars

The descent had been a catastrophe of light and silence, leaving Commander Elara Voss alone on a shattered plain of ochre dunes. Her suit's reservoir hissed its final breath, and each step through the drifts was a negotiation with entropy. Then, on the horizon, something defied the arithmetic of desolation—a cluster of palms, a shimmer of water, an oasis that had no business existing in this geologic graveyard. It was not relief that stirred her, but a profound and inexplicable unease.

The oasis was a perfect circle of emerald glass, its surface untroubled by even the faintest breeze. Palm trunks spiraled in impossible helices, and the fruit they bore glowed with a phosphorescence that threw no shadows. At its heart, a fountain rose not from stone but from an obsidian pedestal, and standing beside it was a creature that seemed woven from the desert's own mirage—a towering silhouette of shifting sand, equipped with a thousand crystalline eyes that blinked in slow, asynchronous rhythm.
