The Storm-Warden of Whisperwood

High Upper Intermediate (B2 High) IELTS Prep CEFR B2 634 words 5 min read

Despite the gathering gloom, the forest pulsed with unnerving vitality. Shadows twisted between gnarled trunks, and the undergrowth rustled as though it were breathing. Elara, a cartographer hired to chart the Whisperwood, had been warned about the legend of a living dinosaur — a creature that could summon storms with its wrath. Yet what she found beside the riverbank was not a myth: a cluster of enormous, three-toed tracks, still caked with mud that glistened like black glass. A cold sliver of excitement slithered down her spine, and she decided to follow the trail, unaware that every step would drag her toward a terrible choice.

Deep in the forest, she came across an ancient warden named Mira, whose wrinkled face bore the scars of countless tempests. Mira grabbed Elara's arm and asked, with a strange, sharp urgency, whether she had strayed from the marked path. Elara, mindful of her reputation, replied with a half-truth: she had been disoriented by the maze of twisted oaks. Immediately, the air grew dense; across the canopy, a low rumbling began, not from thunderclouds but from beneath the earth itself. A pair of smoldering amber eyes opened in the gloom between two trees, fixing Elara with a gaze that felt like a verdict.
