Captain Elara Voss, a seasoned astronaut, was stranded on an uncharted planet after a meteor strike crippled her shuttle. At dawn, she discovered a magnificent school carved into a floating crystal mountain, its towers shimmering with arcane energy. Despite her scientific training, she felt an unsettling presence in the air, as if the very forest was watching her.

The school, known as the Luminara Academy, was not what it appeared. Students were taught to transmute the roots of the ancient Wraithwood forest into gold, a practice that fueled a booming trade with distant kingdoms. Elara observed that the trees were withering, and a dark mist was creeping from the roots. The headmaster, a robed figure named Veyron, proudly explained that the academy's prosperity depended on this 'harvest', but Elara noticed his eyes flicker with doubt.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple Passive: was/were + past participle

Use the past simple passive to describe actions that happened in the past when the focus is on the action or the receiver, not the doer. It is common in narratives and reports.

“ Students were taught to transmute the roots of the ancient Wraithwood forest into gold.
Tip: Make sure the past participle is correct (e.g., 'taught', not 'teached') and that the subject agrees with 'was' or 'were'.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time. It helps show the order of events in a story.

“ He admitted that the school's growth had come at a price.
Tip: Use the past perfect only when you need to make the sequence clear; if the order is obvious, the past simple may be enough.
Third Conditional: If + past perfect, would have + past participle

Use the third conditional to imagine a different past outcome that did not happen. It often expresses regret or hypothetical scenarios.

“ If she had not acted, the forest would have been destroyed.
Tip: Remember to use 'had' in the if-clause and 'would have' in the main clause; do not mix with 'would' alone.
