In the heart of the frozen tundra, where the wind howled like a lonely wolf, there lived a colony of penguins. Their kingdom, a sparkling expanse of ice and snow, was ruled by the wise old Emperor Penguin, King Frostbeak. However, this peaceful realm was under threat, as the ice was melting faster each year, and the penguins' home was slowly disappearing. The king knew that they had to act quickly to save their kingdom from destruction.

One day, a young penguin named Pippa noticed that the fish they relied on were becoming scarce. She learned from the elders that their species was becoming endangered, meaning that their numbers were decreasing dangerously, and they might face extinction if nothing changed. The loss of their habitat, caused by warming temperatures, was the main reason for this crisis. Pippa felt a deep determination to help her colony survive.

Grammar Level

B2 · Past Simple Passive, Modal Verbs, Comparative Adjectives

Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a narrative about endangered species and habitat loss
  • recognise and use the past simple passive to describe past events
  • use modal verbs like 'must' to express obligation
  • compare things using comparative adjectives
  • discuss the importance of teamwork and protecting endangered animals

Grammar Focus

Past Simple Passive: was/were + past participle

Use the past simple passive to describe actions that were done to the subject, often when the doer is unknown or unimportant. It is common in narratives to focus on the event rather than the doer.

“ their home was slowly disappearing
Tip: Remember that the past simple passive is formed with 'was' or 'were' plus the past participle of the verb. Use it when the action is more important than who did it.
Modal verbs for obligation: must + base verb

Use 'must' to express strong obligation or necessity, often when the speaker feels it is important to do something. It is used in the story to show the king's command.

“ We must work together
Tip: After 'must', always use the base form of the verb without 'to'. It is used for present or future obligations.
Comparative adjectives: -er/more + adjective + than

Use comparatives to compare two things, showing that one has more of a quality than the other. Short adjectives take '-er', longer ones take 'more'.

“ faster each year
Tip: For one-syllable adjectives, add '-er' (e.g., faster). For adjectives with two or more syllables, use 'more' (e.g., more beautiful).
