Barnaby the bear had always been the biggest and strongest student at Maplewood Elementary. However, he often kept his lunch and school supplies to himself, believing that sharing might make him weaker. One sunny morning, his science teacher, Ms. Rivera, announced a special contest called the Great Body Race. The winner would be the student who could explain the journey of a red blood cell through the heart and lungs most clearly. Barnaby's eyes lit up because he loved a challenge, but he knew he needed help to win.

That afternoon, Barnaby sat alone in the library, staring at a diagram of the heart. He felt confused about how the heart could pump blood to every part of the body. Just then, a small mouse named Mia approached him and offered to share her notes. "If we work together, we can both learn faster," she said with a smile. Barnaby hesitated because he had never shared anything before, but he finally nodded. Together, they discovered that blood travels through a large vessel called an artery away from the heart.

Grammar Focus

Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

Use the present perfect to talk about experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time before now, or that have a result in the present.

“ Barnaby had always been the biggest and strongest student at Maplewood Elementary.
Tip: Remember that 'always' and 'never' often go with the present perfect to describe life experiences.
First Conditional: If + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real or possible situations in the future and their likely results.

“ If we work together, we can both learn faster.
Tip: The 'if' clause uses the present simple, not 'will', even when talking about the future.
Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to describe completed actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past.

“ He realized that sharing his knowledge had made him a better learner and a better friend.
Tip: Look for time expressions like 'yesterday', 'last week', or 'in 2010' to know when to use the past simple.
