Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

In a dark forest, where the trees whispered secrets, lived a brave bear named Bruno. He was a giant, with fur as black as night, but his heart was gentle. One day, a terrible monster, with scales of stone and eyes of fire, came to the forest. It roared, and the ground shook, and all the animals ran away in fear. But Bruno did not run; he stood tall, because he knew he had to protect his home.

The monster, who was twice as big as Bruno, smashed trees and threw rocks. Bruno tried to fight, but the monster was too strong. Each time Bruno charged, the monster knocked him down with its huge tail. Bruno's body ached, and his spirit was low. He thought about giving up, but then he remembered the little foxes and the baby birds. They were all counting on him, and he could not let them down.

A2 · Past Simple, Past Continuous, adverbs

Learning Outcomes

  • Read a short story and understand the main events in the past.
  • Recognise and use regular and irregular past simple verbs to talk about completed actions.
  • Form and understand past continuous sentences to describe ongoing past actions.
  • Identify and use adverbs ending in -ly to describe how actions happen.
  • Answer simple comprehension questions about the story's plot and characters.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., run → ran, bite → bit).

“ Bruno ran with all his might and jumped, biting that spot.
Tip: Learn the irregular past forms of common verbs like run, bite, and stand, because they don't follow the -ed rule.
Past Continuous: was/were + verb(-ing)

Use the past continuous to describe actions that were happening at a certain time in the past, often as a background to another action.

“ They were all counting on him, and he could not let them down.
Tip: Use was with I, he, she, it and were with you, we, they.
Adverbs: adjective + -ly

Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. They describe how an action happens.

“ He bit harder and harder, and finally, the monster fell down with a crash, and its fire went out.
Tip: Not all adverbs end in -ly (e.g., fast, hard), so check a dictionary if you are unsure.
