In the small town of Dry Gulch, the sun was hot and the ground was dry. A dolphin named Finn lived in a secret pool under the old oak tree. The pool was cool and quiet. Finn was happy there, but he was also afraid of the big, noisy town.

One day, a little monkey named Mia came to the pool. She was curious and friendly. "Hello, Finn!" she said. "Why do you hide here?" Finn told her, "I am scared of the loud noises and the fast horses." Mia smiled and said, "I can show you the forest. It has many layers, like a big, green house."

Grammar Level

A2 · Past Simple, Future Simple, prepositions of place

Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a short story about a dolphin and a monkey in a forest.
  • recognise and use past simple verbs like 'took', 'saw', and 'felt' to talk about past events.
  • use 'will' to make simple future sentences about plans and promises.
  • identify and use vocabulary words: canopy, layer, shelter, roots, habitat.
  • answer comprehension questions about the story's events and moral.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular verb

Use the past simple to talk about actions that finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed; irregular verbs change form (e.g., go → went, see → saw).

“ Mia took Finn to the forest.
Tip: Learn the past form of common irregular verbs by heart, like 'take → took' and 'see → saw'.
Future Simple: subject + will + base verb

Use 'will' + base verb to talk about future actions, promises, or decisions made at the moment of speaking.

“ I will not be afraid anymore.
Tip: Remember that 'will' does not change with the subject: I will, you will, he will, etc.
Prepositions of Place: in, on, under, at

Prepositions of place show where something is. 'In' means inside, 'on' means on a surface, 'under' means below, and 'at' means a specific point.

“ A dolphin named Finn lived in a secret pool under the old oak tree.
Tip: Visualise the position: if it is inside, use 'in'; if it is below, use 'under'.
