Paragraphs 1–2 of 6

In the heart of the Dinosaur Jungle, where towering ferns cast long shadows and ancient reptiles roamed, a young dolphin named Kael lived in a hidden freshwater lagoon. Kael was not an ordinary dolphin; he had been swept into this strange land by a great storm and had learned to survive among creatures that had never seen the ocean. The lagoon was his sanctuary, a peaceful refuge that kept him safe from the predatory dinosaurs that ruled the surrounding forest. However, Kael often felt a deep loneliness, for he was the only one of his species in this prehistoric world, and he longed for companionship.

One day, a wise old ranger named Elara arrived at the edge of the lagoon, accompanied by her granddaughter, Lina, who carried a small notebook. They had been tracking a rare tiger, a creature whose species was critically endangered, hoping to lead it to a new preserve where it could live without fear of poachers. "The tiger's habitat has been destroyed by logging," Elara explained to Lina, "and without a safe place to live, it faces extinction." Kael listened intently, his curiosity piqued by their words, though he could not speak their language. He watched as Lina carefully recorded every detail, her determination evident in her focused eyes.

  • Recognise and use the past simple passive to describe past events where the doer is unknown or unimportant.
  • Form present perfect sentences to discuss actions that have present results or relevance.
  • Use modal verbs like 'should' to give advice about protecting endangered species.
  • Define key vocabulary such as 'endangered', 'species', 'preserve', 'extinction', and 'sanctuary' in context.
  • Explain simple actions that help protect endangered animals, as shown in the story.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple Passive: was/were + past participle

Use the past simple passive to describe actions that happened to someone or something in the past, when the doer is unknown or less important. It shifts focus to the receiver of the action.

“ he had been swept into this strange land by a great storm
Tip: Form the passive with the correct past form of 'be' (was/were) plus the past participle of the main verb. Only use it when the object is more important than the subject.
Present Perfect: has/have + past participle

Use the present perfect to talk about past actions that have a result in the present or that continue up to now. It connects the past to the present moment.

“ the tiger's habitat has been destroyed by logging
Tip: Remember that the present perfect is not used with specific past time expressions like 'yesterday' or 'last year'. Use it for experiences, changes, or ongoing situations.
Modal Verbs for Advice: should + base verb

Use 'should' to give advice, make recommendations, or say what is the right thing to do. It is softer than 'must' and often used for suggestions.

“ you should protect the endangered species
Tip: After 'should', always use the base form of the verb without 'to'. For negative advice, use 'should not' or 'shouldn't'.
