Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Zizi the monkey lived in a big green forest. One day, she climbed to the top of a tall tree. She found a strange, shiny dragon sitting on a branch. The dragon's name was Blaze, and he was from a faraway planet. Blaze looked sad because he missed his home.

Zizi wanted to help her new friend. She showed Blaze the different layers of the forest. "Look at the canopy," she said. "It is the highest layer, where the sun shines." Blaze smiled and said, "This canopy is a good shelter from the rain." Zizi nodded and said, "Yes, and the roots below give water to the trees."

Grammar Level

A2 · Past Simple, Future Simple with 'will', Prepositions of Place

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a short story about a monkey and a dragon in a forest.
  • Recognise and use past simple verbs to talk about completed actions.
  • Use 'will' to talk about future actions and predictions.
  • Identify prepositions of place (in, on, under) in sentences.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's events and moral.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about actions that started and finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but some verbs are irregular (e.g., 'climbed' is regular, 'found' is irregular).

“ Zizi climbed to the top of a tall tree.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'found', 'came', and 'said' because they do not follow the -ed rule.
Future Simple with 'will': subject + will + base verb

Use 'will' to talk about the future, make predictions, or express willingness. The verb after 'will' is always in the base form.

“ We will find a safe place!
Tip: Remember that 'will' does not change with the subject: I will, you will, he will, etc.
Prepositions of place: in, on, at, under, below

Prepositions of place show where something is. Use 'in' for inside, 'on' for surfaces, 'at' for specific points, and 'under' or 'below' for lower positions.

“ She found a strange, shiny dragon sitting on a branch.
Tip: Visualise the position: if something is touching a surface, use 'on'; if it is inside, use 'in'.
