Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

In the kingdom of Lanterns, there was a gentle dragon named Ember. Every night, the people lit bright lanterns, and Ember read books in the castle garden. She loved stories about brave knights and faraway lands. There were many books on a small wooden shelf near the roses. Ember read one book every evening and felt very happy.

One morning, Ember saw that the castle garden had stopped growing. The flowers were dry, and the trees had no leaves. "There is a problem," said the gardener. "There were many flowers here last spring, but now there are none." Ember felt sad. She wanted to help, but she did not know how. She sat under a tree and thought for a long time.
