Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

In the kingdom of lanterns, a gentle dragon named Ember lived in a cave full of books. Every evening, the people lit colorful lanterns, and Ember read stories by their soft light. He loved tales of brave knights and faraway places. One day, he noticed that the castle garden had stopped growing. The flowers were dry, and the trees had no leaves. Ember wanted to help, but he did not know how.

Ember decided to ask the wise old gardener for advice. The gardener wore a beautiful embroidered coat, decorated with bright threads. "If I knew the problem, I would fix it," Ember said. The gardener smiled and said, "If you asked the other animals for help, you would find a way." Ember felt shy about asking, but he promised to try. He walked through the garden, which was like a labyrinth of dry paths, and he felt lost.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify vocabulary words like embroidered, labyrinth, and constellations from context.
  • Answer comprehension questions about the story's plot and moral.

Grammar Focus

Conditional Type 2: If + past simple, would + base verb

We use this pattern to talk about imaginary situations in the present or future. The 'if' clause uses the past simple, and the main clause uses 'would' + base verb.

“ If I knew the problem, I would fix it.
Tip: Remember that the verb 'to be' in the if-clause is often 'were' for all subjects (e.g., If I were you).
Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular verb

We use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs have special forms.

“ Ember decided to ask the wise old gardener for advice.
Tip: Learn common irregular verbs (e.g., go → went, see → saw) to use the past simple correctly.
Future Simple: will + base verb

We use 'will' + base verb to talk about the future, make predictions, or express willingness.

“ If we worked together, we would save the garden.
Tip: Use 'will' for decisions made at the moment of speaking and for promises.
