Paragraphs 1–2 of 6

Beneath the perpetual shimmer of an aurora that had lost its luster, the kingdom of Aloria lay buried under an unnatural winter. The royal scholars traced the catastrophe to a fractured constellation of crystals in the distant tundra, though none dared to venture so far. Lioran, the last unicorn of the realm, felt a summons he could not ignore. With a resolve tempered by empathy, he set his hooves northward, leaving behind a land that had forgotten the warmth of spring.

The tundra offered no solace to the weary traveler. Storms of razor-sharp ice swept across the plains, and each breath crystallized in his lungs. Yet Lioran pressed on, his silver horn carving a path through drifts that swallowed entire forests. He recalled the villagers' anguished faces and knew that despair was a luxury he could not afford.

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to talk about an action that happened before another past action or time. It shows which event came first.

“ Beneath the perpetual shimmer of an aurora that had lost its luster, the kingdom of Aloria lay buried under an unnatural winter.
Tip: Use the past perfect for the earlier event and the past simple for the later event to make the order clear.
Passive Voice: be + past participle

Use the passive voice when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, not on who does it. It is common in descriptive and formal writing.

“ The kingdom of Aloria thawed, and its people rejoiced, but the true victory was written not in the bloom of flowers but in the bond forged between a unicorn and a giant.
Tip: Only use the passive when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious from context; otherwise, prefer the active voice for clarity.
Gerunds and Infinitives as Objects: verb + -ing / verb + to + infinitive

Some verbs are followed by a gerund (e.g., 'avoid', 'enjoy'), and some by an infinitive (e.g., 'decide', 'hope'). Learning which pattern each verb takes helps you speak and write accurately.

“ He recalled the villagers' anguished faces and knew that despair was a luxury he could not afford.
Tip: Memorise common verb patterns: 'avoid doing', 'decide to do', 'afford to do', 'consider doing'.
