Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Once upon a time, a mermaid named Marina swam too far from the sea. She found a strange town called Dusty Gulch. The people there were very surprised. They had never seen a mermaid before.

Marina liked the town, but she did not like the hot sun. She wanted to find the river, but it was dry. A man named Bart said, "I can help you find water." But Bart was a trickster. He made a big trap with a net and a rope.

Grammar Level

A2 · Past Simple (regular & irregular), Past Simple Negative

Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a short story in the past simple tense.
  • recognise and use regular and irregular past simple verb forms.
  • form negative sentences in the past simple with 'did not'.
  • answer comprehension questions about the story's events and characters.
  • use new vocabulary related to the story (e.g., mermaid, trap, evidence).

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular (e.g., swim → swam, find → found, make → made).

“ She found a strange town called Dusty Gulch.
Tip: Learn irregular past forms by heart, as they don't follow the -ed rule.
Past Simple Negative: subject + did not + base verb

Use 'did not' (didn't) + the base form of the verb to make negative sentences in the past simple. The main verb does not change.

“ she did not like the hot sun
Tip: Remember to use the base verb after 'did not', not the past form.
Past Simple Irregular Verbs: go → went, see → saw, say → said

Many common verbs have irregular past forms. You need to memorise them because they don't end in -ed.

“ He said, "I was wrong.
Tip: Practice irregular verbs with flashcards or by reading stories.
