Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

Milo was a small, curious monkey. He lived in a big rainforest with tall green trees. One morning, he found a strange, old box near the roots of a tree. The box had a note that said, "Find the secret of the layers." Milo wanted to solve this mystery.

Milo climbed up to the first layer, the canopy. It was full of leaves and bright flowers. He saw birds eating fruit and butterflies resting on branches. "This layer is a good shelter for many animals," he thought. Then he went higher to the emergent layer, where the tallest trees touched the sky.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past

We use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs change form.

“ Milo climbed up to the first layer, the canopy.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'went', 'saw', and 'found' because they don't follow the -ed rule.
Future Simple: subject + will + verb

We use 'will' to talk about the future, make predictions, or promise something.

“ The key was not for a door, but for a secret garden.
Tip: Remember that 'will' never changes form, even with he, she, or it.
Prepositions of place: in, on, at, under, near

Prepositions of place show where something is. 'In' means inside, 'on' means on a surface, 'at' means a point, 'under' means below, and 'near' means close to.

“ He found a strange, old box near the roots of a tree.
Tip: Use 'in' for large areas like forests, and 'on' for surfaces like branches.
