Paragraphs 1–2 of 3

Prince Leo lives on a beautiful floating island. It is high in the sky, and the sun is always warm. One day, a dark ship comes near the island. An evil man named Vex steals the shiny magic stone from the castle. Leo is brave, but he is not strong enough yet. He knows he must get the stone back.

Leo jumps on his flying horse and goes after the ship. The wind is loud, and the sky is dark. Vex throws fireballs, and Leo dodges them all. But Vex is fast, and Leo falls from the horse. Leo hits the water hard, but he remembers his promise to never give up and climbs back up.

Learning Outcomes

  • read and understand a short adventure story about Prince Leo and the magic stone.
  • recognise and use the present simple to describe facts and routines.
  • recognise and use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past.
  • use prepositions of place correctly to say where things are or happen.
  • answer simple questions about the story's characters and events.

Grammar Focus

Present Simple: subject + verb(-s)

Use the present simple to talk about facts that are always true or situations that are generally true. For he, she, and it, add -s to the verb.

“ Prince Leo lives on a beautiful floating island.
Tip: Remember to add -s to the verb when the subject is he, she, or it (e.g., lives, comes, steals).
Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed; irregular verbs have special forms.

“ Leo hits the water hard, but he remembers his promise to never give up and climbs back up.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'fell', 'gave', and 'threw' because they don't follow the -ed rule.
Prepositions of place: in, on, from, into

Use prepositions of place to show where something is or where something happens. For example, 'in' for inside, 'on' for surfaces, 'from' for origin, and 'into' for movement to inside.

“ Vex falls into the ocean.
Tip: Pay attention to the preposition that goes with each place, like 'on the island', 'in the sky', and 'from the castle'.
