Last week, a rabbit named Benny went to the jungle ruins. A big competition was there. The prize was a golden carrot. Benny wanted to win it.

The ruins were old and spooky. Benny saw a big stone rabbit with red eyes. But it was just a statue. Then he heard a scary growl. It was a tiny frog with a cold.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular and change form.

“ Last week, a rabbit named Benny went to the jungle ruins.
Tip: Learn irregular past forms like went, saw, heard, ran, and made as whole words, because they do not follow the -ed rule.
There was / There were + noun

Use 'there was' with singular nouns and 'there were' with plural nouns to say that something existed or was present in the past.

“ A big competition was there.
Tip: Remember: 'there was' for one thing, 'there were' for more than one thing.
Because + clause (giving a reason)

Use 'because' to join two ideas and explain why something happened or why someone felt a certain way.

“ They looked sad because they lost.
Tip: Put the reason after 'because' and make sure it has a subject and a verb.
