Paragraphs 1–2 of 5

Percy, a little penguin, wandered into the enchanted forest because he had lost his way. The trees whispered strange sounds, and the air shimmered with unnatural purple light. Although he was frightened, he remembered his grandmother's advice to stay calm and think carefully.

Suddenly, a shadowy owl swooped down and asked him a question: "What is the capital of France?" Percy knew the answer, but when he opened his beak, his mind was completely empty. The forest had a magic that stole his memories, and he felt panic rising in his heart. Because he could not remember, he began to shake.

Learning Outcomes

  • Read a short story and identify examples of the past simple, past continuous, and first conditional.
  • Use the past simple to describe completed actions in a narrative.
  • Form and use the past continuous to talk about actions in progress in the past.
  • Construct first conditional sentences to discuss possible future outcomes.
  • Retell the story's main events using appropriate past tenses.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, while irregular verbs have special forms.

“ Percy, a little penguin, wandered into the enchanted forest because he had lost his way.
Tip: Learn the irregular past forms by heart, as they don't follow the -ed rule.
Past Continuous: was/were + verb-ing

Use the past continuous to describe actions that were in progress at a particular time in the past, often interrupted by another action.

“ he felt panic rising in his heart
Tip: Use the past continuous for background actions and the past simple for the main events.
First Conditional: If + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real or possible future situations and their results.

“ If he stayed in the forest, they would never learn what happened to him.
Tip: Remember to use the present simple in the if-clause, not will.
