In the shadowy depths of the abandoned toy factory, where rusted machines stood like silent sentinels, a lone alien named Zorblax discovered a hidden portal. This portal, which had been dormant for centuries, flickered with an eerie blue light, revealing glimpses of a dying kingdom. Zorblax, an exiled prince from a distant planet, realized that his homeworld was on the brink of extinction. The kingdom's life force, a rare species of luminous butterflies, was being hunted to the point of endangerment. He knew that only by returning could he save his people, but the portal required a key that was lost in the factory's labyrinth.

As Zorblax navigated the creaky corridors, he encountered a child named Elara, who had been tracking a rare tiger that had escaped from a nearby preserve. Elara, who was brave and resourceful, explained that the tiger was part of an endangered species and needed to be guided to a new sanctuary. Together, they realized that the key to the portal was actually the tiger's collar, which contained a crystal that could open the gateway. However, the factory was booby-trapped, and they had to work as a team to avoid the collapsing floors and grasping mechanical arms. Their partnership was uneasy at first, but they soon understood that teamwork makes the dream work.

B2 · Past Perfect, Passive Voice, Relative Clauses

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a spooky narrative about an alien and a child saving an endangered species.
  • Recognise and use the past perfect to sequence past events in a story.
  • Identify and form passive voice constructions to focus on actions and results.
  • Use relative clauses to add descriptive details about people and things.
  • Explain the importance of teamwork and habitat protection for endangered species.

Grammar Focus

Past Perfect: had + past participle

Use the past perfect to describe an action that happened before another past action or time. It shows the order of events in the past.

“ This portal, which had been dormant for centuries, flickered with an eerie blue light.
Tip: Use the past perfect when you need to make it clear that one past event happened before another. It often appears with words like 'before', 'after', or 'by the time'.
Passive Voice: be + past participle

Use the passive voice when the focus is on the action or the receiver of the action, rather than the doer. It is common in formal or academic writing.

“ The habitat loss caused by the relentless expansion of a dark force had pushed the butterflies to the edge of extinction.
Tip: To form the passive, use the correct tense of 'be' and the past participle of the main verb. Only use it when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious.
Relative Clauses: who, which, that

Relative clauses add extra information about a noun. Use 'who' for people, 'which' for things, and 'that' for both in defining clauses.

“ Elara, who was brave and resourceful, explained that the tiger was part of an endangered species.
Tip: Place the relative clause immediately after the noun it describes. Use commas for non-defining clauses (extra information) and no commas for defining clauses (essential information).
