Paragraphs 1–2 of 4

On a floating island above the desert, a calm bear named Boro lived alone. He often watched the hot sand below and felt the dry wind. One day, a small lizard named Lila arrived on a leaf. She was very thirsty and tired from the long journey. Boro gave her water from a big plant that stored it inside.

Lila taught Boro how desert animals survive. "We stay cool in the shade of rocks," she said. "We find food at night when it is cool." Boro learned that living things adapt to their environment. He also learned that desert plants save water in their thick leaves. The two friends shared stories under the hot sun.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past

Use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but some verbs are irregular (e.g., 'gave', 'felt', 'blew').

“ Boro gave her water from a big plant that stored it inside.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs do not take -ed; learn them by heart.
Relative clause with 'who' or 'that': noun + who/that + verb

Use 'who' for people and 'that' for things or animals to add extra information about a noun.

“ Boro gave her water from a big plant that stored it inside.
Tip: Place the relative clause right after the noun it describes.
Prepositions of place: in, on, under, above

Use prepositions of place to show where something is. 'In' means inside, 'on' means on a surface, 'above' means higher than.

“ On a floating island above the desert, a calm bear named Boro lived alone.
Tip: Visualise the position to choose the correct preposition.
