Seldom does one encounter a canine as audacious as Barnaby, a diminutive corgi whose aspirations soared far beyond the confines of his terrestrial origins. Having stowed away aboard the Starship Petunia, he inadvertently became the first of his species to traverse the intergalactic expanse. Not only did he survive the voyage, but he also acquired a peculiar taste for freeze-dried bacon. His odyssey, however, was merely beginning.

Upon landing on the planet Zephyria, Barnaby was greeted by a civilization of hyper-intelligent felines who, despite their technological prowess, were embroiled in a dire predicament. Their ancient ruler, Queen Whiskerina, had been dethroned by her own vizier, a tyrannical tomcat named General Grimalkin. So oppressive was his regime that the populace dared not utter a word of dissent. It was into this maelstrom of political intrigue that our intrepid corgi unwittingly stumbled.

  • Identify cleft sentences with 'It was... that...' to emphasise specific information.
  • Apply the 'not until' inversion pattern correctly in past narrative contexts.

  • Demonstrate comprehension of a humorous sci-fi narrative by answering inference and detail questions.

Grammar Focus

Inversion after negative adverbials: 'Seldom does one encounter...'

When a negative or restrictive adverb (seldom, rarely, not only, no sooner) begins a sentence, the subject and auxiliary verb are inverted to maintain emphasis.

“ Seldom does one encounter a canine as audacious as Barnaby...
Tip: Use inversion only in formal or literary contexts; avoid it in casual conversation.
Cleft sentences with 'It was... that...'

This structure highlights a specific element of the sentence, often used for emphasis or to introduce new information.

“ It was into this maelstrom of political intrigue that our intrepid corgi unwittingly stumbled.
Tip: Ensure the highlighted element is the focus; avoid overusing cleft sentences as they can become repetitive.
Inversion after 'not until'

When a sentence begins with 'not until', the subject and auxiliary verb in the main clause are inverted.

“ Not until Barnaby had been briefed on the intricacies of Zephyrian politics did he realize the gravity of his situation.
Tip: Remember to use the auxiliary verb 'did' with past simple verbs in the main clause.
