Seldom had the pupils of St. Aldate's School for the Sons and Daughters of the Aspiring witnessed such a hubbub over a barometric reading. Basil Snodgrass, the self-appointed school detective, stood upon the assembly hall podium, a magnifying glass pressed theatrically to his eye. "The storm, my dear colleagues," he proclaimed, "is not a weather event but a criminal mastermind, and I intend to interrogate every cloud!" His audience, a gaggle of eleven-year-olds, responded with a mixture of eye-rolls and spontaneous paper aeroplane launches.

As the first thunderclap rattled the windows, Basil deduced that a "perpetrator" had left the gymnasium door ajar. Cracking his knuckles like a grizzled veteran, he marched forth to apprehend the unknown culprit, only to slip on a puddle of forgotten ketchup. The ensuing pratfall, complete with a yelp that startled the school cat, did little to instil confidence in his investigative prowess. Rain lashed the corridors, and within seconds, every light in the building flickered and died, plunging the school into a cavernous darkness.
