Paragraphs 1–2 of 5

Deep in the heart of the jungle, where ancient stone temples crumbled under vines, a young dolphin named Nila swam through flooded ruins. She had been separated from her pod during a storm and now found herself trapped in a maze of dark canals. The water was murky, and strange echoes bounced off the mossy walls. Nila's heart pounded as she realized she was lost, and every shadow seemed to hide a threat.

Nila's brain, the control center of her body, worked quickly to process the danger. Her nerves sent signals to her muscles, telling her to swim cautiously and stay alert. She remembered her mother's lessons about the brain's power to coordinate movement and memory. However, fear clouded her thoughts, making it hard to decide which way to go. Each tunnel looked the same, and the silence was broken only by the drip of water and her own anxious clicks.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past. It is common in stories to describe events that happened one after another.

“ She had been separated from her pod during a storm and now found herself trapped in a maze of dark canals.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs have special past forms (e.g., swim → swam, find → found).
Conditional Type 2: If + past simple, would + base verb

Use this pattern to talk about imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future. It shows what would happen if something were true.

“ If she helped, she might never find her family; if she didn't, the monkey would surely die.
Tip: In the if-clause, use the past simple even though the meaning is present or future.
Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

Use the present perfect to connect a past action to the present. It often describes experiences or actions that have a result now.

“ Nila learned that kindness had not only saved the monkey but also led her home.
Tip: Use 'since' or 'for' to show how long the action has continued.
