Barnaby was no ordinary elephant; he was a brilliant inventor with a flair for the dramatic. While other elephants spent their days wallowing in mud, Barnaby had cobbled together a time machine from discarded circus props and a rusty alarm clock. He called it the "Chronocopter," though it looked more like a giant metal teapot with a propeller. Despite the ridicule he endured from his herd, Barnaby remained convinced that his contraption would one day save them all.

One sweltering afternoon, as dark clouds gathered ominously on the horizon, Barnaby decided to demonstrate the Chronocopter's capabilities. "Behold!" he trumpeted, "I shall travel back to yesterday and fetch us some shade!" The other elephants merely rolled their eyes, muttering that Barnaby had finally lost his marbles. Undeterred, he squeezed his bulky frame into the cockpit and cranked the ignition. With a deafening sputter, the machine vanished, leaving behind only a trail of smoke and the lingering scent of peanuts.

  • Answer comprehension questions about a humorous story with a moral.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Use the past simple to describe completed actions in the past, often with a specific time or sequence.

“ Barnaby squeezed his bulky frame into the cockpit and cranked the ignition.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'squeeze' become 'squeezed'? No, 'squeeze' is regular; but 'crank' is regular too. Actually, focus on the pattern: both verbs are in past simple to show completed actions.
Past Continuous: was/were + verb(-ing)

Use the past continuous to describe actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past, often interrupted by another action.

“ The wind howled like a pack of hungry wolves, and rain lashed against his thick hide.
Tip: Use past continuous for background actions and past simple for the main events that interrupt them.
Comparative adjectives: -er/more + adjective + than

Use comparatives to compare two things, showing that one has more of a quality than the other.

“ Actions speak louder than words.
Tip: For short adjectives, add -er; for longer adjectives, use 'more'. Remember 'than' to introduce the second item.
