In the kingdom of Lanterns, where thousands of paper lanterns floated above the streets every night, there lived a gentle dragon named Ember. Although Ember was a dragon, she did not breathe fire or guard treasure. Instead, she spent her days reading books in the royal library, which was her favourite place in the whole castle. The library had tall shelves full of stories about faraway lands, and Ember loved every single one. She was so quiet and kind that the castle guards often forgot she was there at all.

One morning, the castle gardener, an old woman named Mala, came to the library with a worried face. "The castle garden does not grow anymore," she said softly. "The flowers do not open, and the vegetables do not appear." Ember looked up from her book and felt sad for Mala, because the garden was the heart of the castle. Mala explained that the garden needed a special kind of help, but she did not know what to do. Ember wanted to help, but she was afraid to speak up.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use the Present Simple negative (do/does + not + verb) to talk about things that do not happen.
  • Recognise and use the conjunctions 'although' and 'because' to connect ideas in complex sentences.
  • Understand and use the vocabulary words 'auxiliary', 'sentience', and 'embroidered' in context.
  • Answer comprehension questions about a story and identify its moral.

Grammar Focus

Present Simple negative: subject + do/does + not + verb

Use this pattern to say that something is not true or does not happen in the present. Use 'do not' with I, you, we, they, and 'does not' with he, she, it.

“ The castle garden does not grow anymore.
Tip: Remember to use the base form of the verb after 'do not' or 'does not' (e.g., 'does not grow', not 'does not grows').
Although + clause, main clause

Use 'although' to introduce a fact that contrasts with the main idea. It shows a surprising or opposite situation.

“ Although Ember was a dragon, she did not breathe fire or guard treasure.
Tip: Put a comma after the 'although' clause when it comes at the beginning of the sentence.
Because + clause, main clause

Use 'because' to give a reason for something. It explains why something happens.

“ Ember looked up from her book and felt sad for Mala, because the garden was the heart of the castle.
Tip: You can also put the 'because' clause at the end: 'She felt sad because the garden was the heart of the castle.'
