The Luminous Seed of the Ruins

High Advanced (C1 High) General Reading CEFR C1 610 words 5 min read

Xel was a Xylosian observer, no larger than a human hand, with translucent wings that caught the dappled jungle light like a sigh made visible. Sent to catalogue the overgrown ruins of a vanished civilization, the little alien floated above moss-eaten monoliths, its proboscis tasting the air for organic signatures. But ominous clouds had begun to coil above the canopy, and a low barometric pressure gnawed at Xel's delicate antennae, foretelling an elemental rage.

Pausing to shelter beneath a fallen archway, Xel noticed a small, desperate squeak emanating from a tangle of roots. A young panna—a round-bodied creature with fur like wet velvet—had become wedged in a natural trap, its hind leg twisted at an impossible angle. Without hesitation, Xel used its fragile limbs to pry the roots apart, the rough bark scraping against its iridescent skin. The panna, once freed, turned to lick Xel's face with its raspy tongue, and a slow, unfamiliar warmth bloomed in the alien's chest.
