Zia loved the old town library. It was a quiet place with tall shelves and dusty corners. One rainy afternoon, she noticed something strange. There were tiny footprints on the floor, but they stopped in the middle of nowhere. Zia looked around, but she saw no one. She felt curious and wanted to find out more. The footprints were small, like a child's, and they seemed to lead to a blank wall.

Zia decided to follow the footprints. She walked slowly and looked closely at the floor. The footprints went past the history section and turned left. Then they stopped right in front of a bookshelf. Zia pushed the bookshelf, but it did not move. She looked behind a row of books and found a small, embroidered bookmark. The bookmark had shiny thread and a picture of a key. It was a clue! Zia remembered that the library had a secret room. She had heard about it from the librarian. The librarian said, "Last week, I found a hidden door." Zia felt excited. She knew the answer was closer than she thought.

  • Read and understand a short mystery story with a clear cause-and-effect plot.
  • Recognise and use the simple past tense with time phrases like 'last week' and 'one rainy afternoon'.
  • Identify vocabulary words like 'sentience' and 'embroidered' from context clues.
  • Answer comprehension questions about character motivation and story events.

Grammar Focus

Simple Past: subject + verb-ed (regular) / irregular verbs

Use the simple past to talk about actions that finished in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, and irregular verbs change form.

“ Zia loved the old town library.
Tip: Learn common irregular past forms like 'went' and 'saw' because they don't follow the -ed rule.
Past Simple with time phrases: subject + past verb + time phrase

Time phrases like 'last week', 'yesterday', or 'one rainy afternoon' tell when a past action happened.

“ Last week, I found a hidden door.
Tip: Put the time phrase at the beginning or end of the sentence for clarity.
Past Simple in dialogue: 'said' + comma + quotation

Use 'said' to report speech in the past. Put the speaker's words in quotation marks.

“ She said, "You don't need to hide. I will be your friend."
Tip: Remember to change the tense inside the quotation if the original speech was in the present.
