Paragraphs 1–2 of 5

Dina, a young dolphin, had always been curious about the ocean's secrets. One morning, she noticed that her pod had disappeared without a trace. However, she remembered her mother's words: "Actions speak louder than words." Therefore, she decided to search for them instead of just waiting. She knew that dolphins, like all mammals, must breathe air through their blowholes, so she surfaced often to scan the horizon.

As she swam, Dina used echolocation to navigate the dark waters. She clicked and listened for the echoes that would reveal her surroundings. Suddenly, she heard a distant song—it was the call of a humpback whale. The whale explained that he had seen a dolphin pod heading north on a migration route. "If you follow the current, you might catch up," he said. Dina thanked him and quickly swam away.

Grammar Focus

Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

We use the present perfect to talk about experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time before now, or that have a result in the present.

“ Dina, a young dolphin, had always been curious about the ocean's secrets.
Tip: Use the present perfect with time expressions like 'always', 'never', 'ever', and 'since' to describe experiences.
First Conditional: if + present simple, will + base verb

We use the first conditional to talk about real or possible situations in the future and their results.

“ If you follow the current, you might catch up.
Tip: Use 'might' instead of 'will' if the result is less certain.
Past Simple: subject + verb-ed (regular) or irregular verb

We use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past at a specific time.

“ She helped free the turtle, who warned her about the dangers of ocean pollution.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'swim' become 'swam' in the past simple.
