On the distant planet Zephyria, where the sky was a perpetual twilight of purple and gold, there lived an owl named Orion. Unlike the owls of Earth, Orion had feathers that shimmered with a faint bioluminescence, allowing him to navigate the perpetual dusk. He was known throughout the forest of Luminara for his wisdom and his kind heart, always ready to help a fellow creature in need. One evening, as he perched on a crystal branch, he noticed a young alien named Lumi weeping softly. Lumi, a small, fox-like creature with translucent wings, had lost her most treasured possession: a star-shaped pendant that had belonged to her grandmother.

The pendant, Lumi explained between sobs, was not just a piece of jewelry; it was a family heirloom that contained a tiny fragment of a real star, which glowed with a warm, comforting light. She had worn it every day since her grandmother's passing, and now it was gone. Orion's heart ached for her, and he immediately offered to help search for it. "Do not worry, little one," he said gently. "We will find your pendant, no matter how long it takes." Lumi looked up with hope in her eyes, and together they set off into the deepening twilight.

Grammar Level

B2 · Past Simple, Past Perfect, modal verbs

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and understand a fantasy narrative set on an alien planet, identifying key plot points and character motivations.
  • Recognise and use the past simple and past perfect tenses to describe sequences of events in a story.
  • Use modal verbs such as 'could' and 'might' to express ability and possibility in context.
  • Infer the moral of the story and discuss the importance of kindness in helping others.

Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) or irregular past form

Used to describe completed actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, while irregular verbs have unique forms.

“ Orion used his keen night vision to scan the ground, while Lumi fluttered about, checking under bushes and behind rocks.
Tip: Remember that irregular verbs like 'find' become 'found' in the past simple; memorise common ones.
Past Perfect: had + past participle

Used to show that an action happened before another past action. It clarifies the order of events.

“ The pendant, Lumi explained between sobs, was not just a piece of jewelry; it was a family heirloom that contained a tiny fragment of a real star, which glowed with a warm, comforting light.
Tip: Use past perfect when you need to make it clear that one past event occurred before another.
Modal verbs for ability and possibility: can, could, may, might

Used to express ability (can/could) or possibility (may/might). They are followed by the base form of the verb.

“ For Orion knew that kindness, like the light of a star, could illuminate even the darkest of places and bring hope to those who needed it most.
Tip: Use 'could' for past ability or general possibility, and 'can' for present ability.
