Grammar Focus

Past Simple: subject + verb(-ed) / irregular past form

Use the past simple to talk about finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, but many common verbs are irregular and change form.

“ He saw candy trees and chocolate rivers, and he smiled.

Tip: Learn the irregular past forms by heart, because they do not follow the -ed rule.

Relative clause with 'who': noun + who + verb

Use 'who' to add extra information about a person. The clause comes right after the person it describes.

“ Captain Redbeard, who was a gentle pirate, sailed his ship to a strange land.

Tip: Put the 'who' clause immediately after the person, and keep the main sentence complete around it.

Past Simple negative and question forms: did not / did + subject + verb

Use 'did not' for negatives and 'did + subject + verb' for questions in the past simple. The main verb stays in its base form.

“ The sorcerer felt lonely and stopped, because he had no friends.

Tip: After 'did' or 'did not', always use the base verb, never the past form.
