Paragraphs 1–2 of 5

Once upon a time, a small robot named Bolt was cleaning a dusty vampire castle. He had never expected to meet a young dolphin named Splash, who was lost and far from the ocean. 'I was following a pod of whales on their migration,' Splash explained, 'but I got separated during a storm.' Bolt tilted his metal head and said, 'A pod? You mean a group of whales? That sounds like a family.' Splash nodded, 'Yes, and we are all mammals, just like you are not.' Bolt beeped in confusion, but he liked Splash immediately.

Suddenly, a loud roar echoed through the castle. A giant monster with three eyes and purple fur appeared! 'I am the Grumble Beast, and I will eat this castle!' it shouted. Splash squeaked in fear, but Bolt rolled forward bravely. 'If we work together, we can defeat this monster,' Bolt said. 'However, I need your help, Splash. Can you use your echolocation to find its weak spot?' Splash clicked and listened carefully, then pointed with her fin. 'Its weak spot is behind its left ear!' she cried.

Grammar Focus

Present Perfect: subject + have/has + past participle

Use the present perfect to talk about experiences or actions that happened at an unspecified time before now, or that have a connection to the present.

“ He had never expected to meet a young dolphin named Splash
Tip: Remember that 'never' and 'ever' are common with the present perfect to talk about life experiences.
First Conditional: if + present simple, will + base verb

Use the first conditional to talk about real or possible future situations and their results.

“ If we work together, we can defeat this monster
Tip: Use 'can' instead of 'will' when you want to show ability or possibility in the result clause.
Past Simple: subject + verb-ed / irregular past

Use the past simple to talk about completed actions in the past, often with a specific time or sequence.

“ Splash swam through the castle's flooded hallway and splashed water everywhere
Tip: Learn irregular past forms like 'swam' and 'splashed' to make your stories more natural.
